Re-treatment is a procedure to remove an existing root filling .

By taking an X-ray your dentist may have discovered  infection around a tooth which has  previously been root treated. Cases of an existing cap or crown requiring  replacement can fall into this category.

The tooth may  be  free of pain, but  in situations where infection is diagnosed this  must  be treated prior to the new cap or crown being fitted.

The use of dedicated instruments and solvents aid the removal of the existing root filling , after which your tooth will be dressed with a medicament to aid the healing process. A further appointment is then scheduled  to complete the procedure.

Retreatment cases are complex.  Cases arise involving the need to remove silver points, separated instruments and paste type root filling materials, in order to gain access to the infection.

Your individual  case  will be explained in detail as the consultation progresses.

One of Dr Charlesworth's cases shown below illustrates that  once the old root filling has been removed, the infection can be reached and cleansed. With the aid of an operating microscope,  the detailed anatomy not  previously  accessible can be treated.

These x-rays show a molar which required re-treatment.The amalgam filling was removed in order to allow access to an anchor screw  which was previously fitted in the canal .

To complete the case the canals were reshaped and disinfected, allowing restoration of the tooth with a crown fitted by the family dentist, following completion of the endodontic procedures by Dr Charlesworth.
